Title Settlement situation
Alternate Title Altitude of Centre of Settlement [80]
Publication Date 2008-04-30
Abstract The human settlements are concentrated in the lower regions of the Alps. Nearly 85% of the main municipalities are situated below 1,000 m. Population development is related to the altitude of municipalities. The population grew strongly between 1870 and 1990 in the lower valleys and the cities. The small municipalities in the really mountainous regions shrank over the same period. Since 1990 these differences have become less sharp. The population has increased at all altitudes, notably in the higher regions above 1,500 m. The municipalities between 1,000 and 1,500 m showed the weakest development. Here the share of municipalities with a decreasing population is highest.
