Abstract Relief, soil and climate in the Alps vary greatly from one small spatial unit to the next. In addition, human land use is often only possible in extensive form. Together these factors have created a mosaic of diverse habitats and habitat conditions such as numerous natural and semi-natural open areas, e.g. the species-rich Alpine pastures, Alpine hay meadows or primeval meadows above the Alpine tree line. This category also includes moors, shrub and bush areas of the sub-Alpine zone, vegetation-free or only sparsely covered screes and rock leas as well as areas with permanent snow cover and glaciers.
