Abstract Students are generally considered very mobile and reality bears this out. Although in principle they prefer the educational options available in the vicinity, this regional loyalty is no obstacle to studying. If they need to move because particular courses are not available locally, distance hardly plays a role. Today mobility is greatly encouraged by the European Commission. Mobility programmes such as ERASMUS, LINGUA, or LEONARDO were established to give financial support to students taking some of their courses in other EU states. Moreover there is an increasing choice of distance learning options that do not necessitate a change of place.
