Abstract Spatial and temporal distance to the nearest hospital is an important indicator of medical provision and of the recuperation situation of the patients. Distance is the most important criterium for patients when choosing a hospital. One reason for this might well be that a near-by hospital means that friends and family of the patient can visit them more easily and more often. The patient will also be more familiar with the vicinity and as a result feel more at ease. This indicator also points to another essential aspect: in medical emergencies such as heart attacks or strokes every second counts. Patients in such an emergency who are brought into hospital in time have a much better chance of survival.
