Title Settlement situation
Alternate Title Population Density per Available Settlement Area [59]
Publication Date 2008-04-30
Abstract If you put the population of the Alpine region in relation to the area that is actually suitable for settlement instead of the total territory, the Alpine space ranks among the most densely populated regions in Europe. The area that can be settled currently makes up 17.3% of the territory and was populated in the year 2000 by a total of 13,670,849 inhabitants, resulting in an effective population density of 414 people per km². Similarly high densities can also be found in other mountainous regions across the world and are comparable to densely populated regions beyond the Alps.
