Title Household structure
Alternate Title Older People Living in Single-person Households [57]
Publication Date 2008-04-30
Abstract The proportion of singles in this age group is first and foremost a direct result of the different life expectations of men and women. It can be used as an indicator of changes in social forms of life, as family households increasingly contain only the core family and not the larger family. However, the rate of divorce/separation has risen in this age group too. A high percentage of older singles is often characteristic of areas with an age imbalance resulting from low birth rates and/or emigration of the younger population. A low rate of older persons among the single person households is therefore also a measure of economic prosperity.
