Title Demography
Alternate Title Young Age Dependency Ratio [52]
Publication Date 2008-04-30
Abstract The young age dependency ratio is defined as the ratio of the number of young persons (under 15) to the number of working persons aged between 15 and 64. The proportion expresses the socio-economic “future viability” of a population as well as the socio-political “burden” on the working population caused by the young generation. This group too incurs general costs for parents providing infrastructure and care for the young. However, the socio-political consequences for the future are perfectly obvious: fewer children and adolescents today mean a smaller working population, fewer tax payers and parents tomorrow.
