Abstract Big cities of more than 100,000 inhabitants such as Innsbruck, Grenoble, and Maribor, are the exception within the Alps. Instead, larger villages, small and medium-sized towns dominate. Small centres fulfil important functions particularly for their immediate environs and hinterland. This role becomes all the more important the further they are away from metropolitan centres and traffic networks. In this way they counteract the depopulation of rural areas.
