Abstract The employment rate of a country is an important socio-economic indicator for the efficient use of human capital and for the extent to which the basic needs of the population are met. For a sustainable development, the labour markets as well as economic and social policy aim for high employment rates. Empirical research explains the variations in female labour market participation by reference to economic and labour market conditions, demographic and socio-cultural settings, as well as to traditional role conditioning, the institutional conditions of childcare and the possibilities for balancing work and family. In the countries of the European Union, the female employment rate is rising, with part-time work and mini-jobs contributing substantially to this increase.
